Who I Am

Biography

Dr. Behzad Amoozgar is a dedicated and accomplished Hematology-Oncology clinician-scientist currently serving as a second-year fellow at the John Theurer Cancer Center, Hackensack University Medical Center. His professional journey exemplifies a commitment to advancing knowledge, improving clinical outcomes, and fostering the next generation of medical professionals. Born and raised in Tehran, Iran, Dr. Amoozgar earned his medical degree from Tehran University of Medical Sciences, the top-ranked medical school in Iran. He graduated with high honors, laying the foundation for a career driven by academic and clinical excellence.

Following his graduation, Dr. Amoozgar pursued a global career in medical research and education. After immigrating to Canada, he conducted a clinical research fellowship at McMaster University, contributing to advances in clinical trial methodologies. He subsequently joined the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) as a research scholar, where his innovative work in translational and basic science earned him permanent residency in the United States through the National Interest Waiver pathway as a talented researcher. Concurrently, he completed a Master of Public Health (MPH) at the University of California, Berkeley, where he conducted impactful research on the influence of Medicaid expansion on diffuse large B-cell lymphoma outcomes.

During his internal medicine residency at Hackensack Meridian Health JFK University Medical Center, Dr. Amoozgar excelled both academically and clinically. He earned the prestigious PGY2 Faculty Award during the COVID-19 pandemic and was recognized with the National American College of Physicians (ACP) Best Clinical Research Award in 2020. His clinical research on hematologic malignancies was highlighted on Healio News, cementing his reputation as a rising leader in his field.

Dr. Amoozgar joined Washington University in St. Louis as an instructor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Hospital Medicine, from 2021 to 2023. During this tenure, he honed his skills in inpatient hematology and oncology care, while supervising and mentoring residents and medical students. His current focus encompasses clinical and basic science research in hematology-oncology, particularly leukemia, lymphoma, and cutting-edge treatments such as Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy. He actively integrates molecular and immunotherapeutic advancements into patient care, demonstrating a passion for innovation and evidence-based practice.

Dr. Amoozgar has an impressive portfolio of peer-reviewed publications, abstracts, and presentations, spanning topics such as lymphoma therapeutics, complications of CAR-T therapy, and survivorship challenges in oncology. He is also an active educator through his YouTube channel, Cancer Therapeutics, where he discusses oncology research and therapeutics for a broad audience.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Amoozgar is a dynamic individual who balances his passion for research and teaching with personal interests, including playing drums, working out, cooking, and engaging in outdoor activities with colleagues and friends. His dedication to advancing hematology-oncology, combined with his focus on improving patient outcomes and quality of life, reflects his unwavering commitment to shaping the future of medicine.
